On the morning of July 25, 2010, Nancy Jacobs, age 65, in the arms of her family, passed gently and peacefully into heaven. Nancy fought a very courageous and brave battle against acute myeloid leukemia for 49 days. While her time here on earth seems much too short, we know that she left feeling the overwhelming and immense love of her family.
Nancy Ann Jacobs was born August 24, 1944 in Aberdeen, Washington to Leo and Thelma (Brundidge) Potter. Nancy grew up in Copalis Crossing with her older brother Daryl, and her twin brother Norman.
Nancy lived in the Wynooche Valley for many years while raising her children Greg and Kristy. Life was full of gardening, floating the river, horseback riding, baseball, picking blackberries, and peeling cascara bark.
Nancy’s love was her husband Dick and her family. Nancy and Dick were married on February 14th, 1986 at their beautiful log home on Camp Creek Road. She found great joy working in her greenhouse and potting shed where she grew beautiful flowers for their home and to share with her children. Nancy was a fantastic gardener and won ‘yard of the year’ on two occasions. Nancy was an avid waterfowl hunter and spent many mornings hunting with Dick on their farm in the Brady Bottoms. She also loved to ride ATV’s with her grandchildren at the farm. One of Nancy’s favorite hobbies was shooting trap, skeet, and sporting clays. Nancy was a great shot and competitor at the Evergreen Gun Club and took great pleasure in regularly beating her husband and the guys. Nancy was a member of the National Rifle Association for Women Shooters, Ducks Unlimited, Evergreen Sportsmen Club, many different gardening and flowering clubs, and a Fibromyalgia Support Group.
Nancy and Dick traveled the world together, hunting with friends in Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and Argentina. Nancy also loved to fish for salmon and steelhead. Nancy and Dick were selected by Ducks Unlimited to travel to Washington D.C. to lobby for the farm bill. While in D.C., she was thrilled to tour the White House. She was a fantastic clam digger and had taught all of her children and grandchildren how to dig for clams. She was also an accomplished seamstress and took time to teach her granddaughters to sew. Nancy loved sports especially watching her granddaughters play fast pitch for the Montesano Bulldogs. Other hobbies included golfing, blackjack, photography, and Zuma.
Nancy was vivacious, energetic, fun loving, full of life, and always ready with a practical joke and a laugh. Nancy was spontaneous, unpredictable, and you never knew what to expect with her. Sometimes it was all you could do to just keep up with her. She was a very happy wife, mother, and grandmother that was dearly loved. We will miss her deeply.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband Dick; her son Greg (Sarah) McEvoy of Montesano, her daughter Kristy (Mark) Beardemphl of Tacoma, her stepdaughter Kelly Bagnell (Gordy) of Summit Lake, her stepdaughter Kim Jacobs of Olympia; her grandchildren Jenny, London, Alexa, Mackenzie, Jacob, Kennedy, Ally, and Justin, and her great-grandson Parker. Her grandchildren will dearly miss their “Crazy Grandma.” Also missing Nancy are Socks and Molly.
Dick and their family want to thank all of their friends for their support and love. We would also like to express our gratitude for the care given to Nancy by the doctors and nurses at St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at the Montesano Presbyterian Church at 201 East McBryde Avenue. Graveside services will follow at the Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen. Please join the family in remembering Nancy at the Grays Harbor Country Club at 5300 Central Park Drive following the graveside service.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
