Local Dems call for impeachment

Friday, April 20, 2007 11:11 AM PDT

The Grays Harbor Democrats have jcalled for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

The local party recently passed a resolution urging Washington state’s congressional delegation to start the impeachment process.

The resolution charges President Bush and Vice President Cheney with breaking laws and intentionally deceiving the United States Congress about the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war. It also cites the arrest and detention of people who have not been charged and are held without trial and without legal council, authorization of torture in violation of the Geneva Conventions and the Federal Torture Act and spying on Americans without warrants, said Candace Milne of Humptulips.

Milne was the Democratic Central Committee member who introduced the resolution in February. About 50 members voted on the resolution earlier this month and it passed with very little opposition, she said.

Congress not interested

“They have broken many of our laws, and unenforced laws become useless,” she said. “They are moving us from democracy to tyranny by breaking our laws and not upholding the constitution. The main purpose of this is to restore our democracy, our freedoms and to reaffirm our laws. ...We’re very disappointed the (Congressional) Democrats are not pursuing this. Those citizens who firmly believe in impeachment are trying to put pressure on them to go forward.”

George Behan, a spokesman for Congressman Norm Dicks, said while Dicks’ office has not seen the resolution yet, such calls for impeachment have been coming in from around Dicks’ district and the country.

“Impeachment is not something the Democratic Congress is pursuing,” he said. “It believes it would be a distraction.”

Milne said there is a movement to start an impeachment group on Grays Harbor. Anyone who is interested can contact her at candance@peoplepc.com.
